Gas RC Trucks - Radio Control Hobbies
Gas RC trucks are part of the group of RC models that are powered by nitro and gasoline engines. The main difference between gas powered RC trucks and nitro or electric models is in the sheer size, due to the enlarged 2 stroke gasoline RC engine. Many of these Gas RC trucks and cars use similar 2 stroke engines that can be found in garden tools and equipment including edgers and blowers.
This means that RC trucks generally fit into the 1:5 scale, meaning that they are about twice the size of nitro and electric models. They are HUGE!
The scale of an gas RC truck or car is based on the size of the truck in comparison with the size of the actual truck it’s modeled after.
For example, a 1/10 scale vehicle will range in size from 15-24 inches in length and 10-12 inches in width, whereas a typical 1/8 scale RC truck will range from 24-35 inches in length to 12-18 inches in width. For the most part, the 1/10 scale vehicles are far more popular amongst dedicated hobbyists due to how much easier they are to maneuver, maintain and of course, store or transport to alternative locations.
As you move up the scale, you will also find gas powered RC trucks that feature a 23cc motor which packs some serious punch in terms of speed. An added bonus is that with the larger RC truck models, since their gas tanks are bigger, they can run for a longer period of time without needing to be charged like you would with electric models.
A few other things to look for when purchasing your first Gas RC truck is in the actual size of the two-stroke engine, as well as the type of starting mechanism that is included with the vehicle. A typical gas powered RC truck are shipped with a simple pull start cord, which lets you start the engine simple by tugging on the pull string while others may include an electric push button starter.
The downside to gas powered RC trucks is that they are often more expensive than those running on nitro or electric, and are not designed for beginner hobbyists. However apart from the initial cost to purchase a gas RC truck the actual cost to run them is quite affordable, as gas prices are often lower than that of nitro methane fuel, needed to power nitro RC cars and trucks.
When purchasing a gas powered RC truck, look for models that offer the RTR (ready to run) feature, especially if you want to get driving rather than fuss around with having to assemble parts.
These RTR models will come fully constructed, requiring only batteries for the actual transmitter and gas for the engine! You will want to read over the instruction guide and manufacturers warranty for helpful tips on how to extend the life of your RC vehicle, while learning how to effectively tune the carburetor for optimal performance.
