Jet RC Plane - Radio Control Hobbies
A jet RC plane is simply a radio controlled jet that is powered by actual jet engines. It flies faster than ordinary RC airplanes. Only experienced pilots can fly RC jets as it takes a lot of skill to maneuver them.
One good thing about flying these jets is that because they of their speed, the amount of wind does not affect them as it would other RC airplanes. This means wind will not ruin a trip to the flying field. However, you will need a lot more space in flying an RC jet compared with other kinds of RC airplanes.
There are three types of RC jets based on the powerplants they use: pusher jets, ducted fan jets, and turbine jets.
Pusher jets refer to models that use propellers situated near the back of the plane. These propellers give the jet a powerful thrust. Some RC jets use a glow engine to power their pusher props, which gives them extra speed. However, they are slower than ducted fan jets and turbine jets. Pusher jets are often launched by hand. People who are just beginning to fly jets can train on a pusher until they master the basics.
Ducted fan jets, as the name suggests, refer to models that are driven by fan engines. These fans, which spin inside a duct or tube, are either run by an electric motor (electric ducted fans) or by glow engines (glow ducted fans). Ducted fan jets, though fast, can fly quietly and smoothly. This is probably the reason why a lot of people prefer to fly this type of jet.
Turbine jets are driven by turbines and burn real aircraft fuel. This gives them amazing speeds of up to 200 mph. They are meant to be flown only by more experienced jet pilots. A small turbine jet can cost over a thousand dollars. Although turbine jets are pricey, they have gained popularity among serious hobbyists and some of the designs are truly things of beauty.
Turbine jets will need good quality aircraft fuel and the correct amount of oil. The speed of a turbine-powered RC jet is given in revolutions per minute (RPMs). The greater the speed, the greater the amount of lubricant needed for optimum performance.
You can maximize the speed of your jet RC airplane by perfecting the design. Make sure that the size of the tail cone is suited for the fan. You should also check if the shape of the airfoil is correct and if the inlet shape is correct. A properly shaped inlet will ensure clean airflow. The surface of your jet should be smooth and clean.
To further your enjoyment of your jet RC plane, you can attach a small video-cam. Now you will be able to enjoy the view from the top. Just be sure to choose a high-resolution camera capable of capturing good images at high altitudes.
Flying RC jets gives pilots a wonderful sense of satisfaction because of the speed and performance they are capable of. Given the right training, this can be a truly awesome experience. It is no wonder a lot of hobbyists get hooked on "the need for speed" with a jet RC plane.
